Privacy Policy

Watchd ("the App", "we", "us") is a movie and TV show tracker for iOS. This Privacy Policy explains what data the App handles and how. The short version: Watchd does not have user accounts, does not track you, shows no ads, and keeps your data on your device.

1. Summary (the short version)

  • No account, no sign-up, no login.
  • We don't collect your name, email, phone, location, contacts or any personal identifiers on our servers.
  • No analytics, no advertising, no tracking across apps or websites, no IDFA.
  • Your library, watch progress, ratings, preferences and optional display name are stored only on your device.
  • To show movie and TV data, the App sends your search text and title requests to The Movie Database (TMDB), a third-party catalog service.
  • Trailers are YouTube videos: their previews and the videos themselves are loaded from YouTube.
  • You can erase all of your data at any time inside the App, or by deleting the App.

2. Who we are

3. Information stored on your device only

The following is created and stored locally on your iPhone (using Apple's on-device storage) and is never transmitted to us:

  • Your library: movies and shows you add, watch statuses, watched episodes, ratings and notes.
  • An optional display name you may enter during onboarding (you can leave it blank).
  • App preferences: theme, content language, notification toggle, view settings.

We have no server that receives or stores this data. iCloud sync is not enabled in this version, so this data does not leave your device through us. If you delete the App, this data is removed with it.

4. Data sent to third parties

4.1 The Movie Database (TMDB)

To provide its catalog (titles, posters, descriptions, cast, ratings, etc.), the App requests data from The Movie Database (TMDB). When you search or open a title, the App sends to TMDB:

  • your search text,
  • the identifiers of the titles you view,
  • a generic content-language preference (e.g. ru or en).

These requests do not include your name, account, device identifier, or any data that identifies you personally. TMDB processes this data under its own privacy policy:

TMDB is operated in the United States, so these requests are processed on servers located in the US.

4.2 YouTube (trailers)

Trailers in the App are YouTube videos. When a title's trailers are shown, their preview images are loaded from YouTube's servers, and when you play a trailer, the App opens YouTube's embedded player. As with any video you open on the web, YouTube (Google) receives your IP address, basic device and browser information and which video is requested, and the embedded player may store cookies or similar data inside the App. The App does not send your library, watch history, display name or any other personal data to YouTube. YouTube processes this data under Google's policies:

4.3 Apple

The App is distributed through the Apple App Store. Apple may collect data related to downloads and (in the future) purchases under Apple's own privacy policy. We do not receive personal data about you from Apple.

Apart from TMDB and YouTube (for trailers), we use no other third-party services that collect your data: no analytics SDKs, no crash reporters that transmit personal data, no advertising networks.

5. Device permissions

The App may ask for the following permissions. Each is optional and used only for the stated purpose:

  • Photo Library (add only): only if you choose to save a share image (e.g. a movie card) to your Photos. The App does not read or browse your photo library.
  • Notifications: to remind you about new episodes. These reminders are scheduled and delivered locally on your device; we do not run a server and do not send push notifications.

You can change or revoke these permissions at any time in iOS Settings → Watchd.

6. Analytics, advertising and tracking

Watchd contains:

  • No analytics or telemetry.
  • No advertising and no ad identifiers (no IDFA, no App Tracking Transparency prompt).
  • No tracking of you across other apps or websites.

We do not sell or share your personal information. (For California residents: we do not "sell" or "share" personal information as defined by the CCPA/CPRA, and there is therefore nothing to opt out of.)

7. Purchases

This version of Watchd is free and contains no in-app purchases or subscriptions. We collect no payment or purchase data. (If paid features are added in a future version, this Policy will be updated to describe them before they are offered.)

8. Children's privacy

Watchd is a general-audience catalog app and is not directed at children under 13 (or under the minimum age of digital consent in your country, e.g. 16 in parts of the EEA). The catalog provided by TMDB may include titles intended for mature audiences. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. Since we don't collect personal data at all, no child-specific data is gathered.

9. Data retention and your rights

Because your data lives only on your device, you are in full control of it:

  • Delete everything in-app: open the App → Profile → "Delete all data" (removes your library, progress and preferences).
  • Delete the App: uninstalling Watchd removes all of its local data from your device.

We do not hold a copy of your personal data on any server, so there is nothing for us to access, export, correct or delete on our side. This means your GDPR rights (access, rectification, erasure, portability, restriction) and CCPA rights are satisfied directly through the on-device controls above. For data processed by TMDB or YouTube, please refer to their privacy policies linked in sections 4.1 and 4.2.

10. International data transfers

When the App fetches catalog data, requests are sent to TMDB's servers in the United States. By using the App you understand that this content data (search text and title IDs, with no personal identifiers) is processed in the US under TMDB's policy. Trailers are loaded from YouTube (Google), which may also process request data outside your country under Google's policy.

11. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the latest version. Material changes will be reflected in an App update. Continued use of the App after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised Policy.

12. This website

This website does not use cookies and does not include trackers, analytics or advertising. It is served from our own server, rented from Vultr (The Constant Company, LLC) in Stockholm, Sweden. The web server does not keep access logs, so we do not store your IP address or the pages you open. Vultr may process technical network data, such as IP addresses, to operate and protect its network, under the Vultr Privacy Policy.
